April has been designated Distracted Driving Awareness Month by The National Safety Council. The National Safety Council has been a safety advocate for over 100 years, aimed at saving lives by preventing injuries. One of their more recent initiatives is a campaign against distracted driving, a concern shared by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration who launched an entire website focused on distracted driving.
Distracted Driving Survey
As part of the new focus on distracted driving, Erie Insurance conducted a survey last February among 1915 drivers, age 18 or older. The plan is to discourage distracted driving by promoting awareness. Some of the statistics given are a bit alarming, as up to 3% of the respondents reported ‘changing drivers’ as a distraction!

Chautauqua County Sheriffs are investigating a head-on collision between a Warren PA resident and a woman from Russell, PA. The car accident happened on PA Route 62, just north of the Pennsylvania / New York border just before 8:00 am yesterday (Tuesday, March 24th).
Initial reports indicate that the vehicle being driven by a Warren PA man was proceeding South on Route 62 when the vehicle struck a guard rail, then careened across the center divide into oncoming traffic. Once in the Northbound lanes, the vehicle struck another vehicle head-on, killing one and wounding another.

Don’t Let a DUI Ruin The Fun on St. Patrick’s Day
St. Patrick’s Day is typically thought of as a ‘drinking’ holiday and some people feel the need to take that to the extreme, especially inexperienced drinkers like most college students. Penn State just celebrated their State Patty’s Day holiday, a school contrived holiday that has gotten out of hand in recent years. Local police planned accordingly this year, beefing up patrols of uniformed and plain-clothed officers before the weekend, and you can believe the local police in Edinboro and Erie will be ready in a couple weeks when St. Patrick’s Day rolls around on Tuesday, March 17th.
Distracted Driving Statistics
Distracted driving is a serious problem in Pennsylvania and across the country. More than 9 people are killed and over 1,153 are injured each day in a car accident involving a distracted driver in the U.S. Keep in mind, these are just the cases that are reported and there are undoubtedly more.
In 2012, there were 3,328 people killed and 421,000 people injured in a car accident involving a distracted driver. These numbers are up from 2011, when almost 20% of all car accidents were attributed to distracted driving.
Sources of Distracted Driving
Activities such as using a cell phone, texting or eating would be a distraction. Fiddling with the car stereo or GPS also qualify as distractions. Texting is the most dangerous because it involves all three types of distraction: Visual (taking your eyes off the road), Manual (taking your hands off the wheel), and Cognitive (taking your mind off of your driving).
A Study on Distracted Driving
Erie PA police are taking a more assertive approach to an increasing problem with gun crimes in the area. One of the biggest changes is the involvement of the Erie office of the FBI and their focus on seizing illegal firearms.
Shootings and Homicides Increased in 2014
In 2014, 49 people were injured in Erie by gunfire, that number rose to almost 60 in 2014. Of the 13 homicides in Erie County, 11 were in the city limits of Erie and 10 victims died as a result of the shooting. Erie police investigated over 400 reports of shots fired in 2014, up sharply from 176 reports in 2013.
Until now, the FBI hadn’t had an active role in Erie’s anti-gun initiative because most offenses involved juveniles. Juveniles are typically prosecuted by county courts, rather than federal courts. Pennsylvania has very strict rules governing which guns are allowed, who may have them, and how they are kept.
More Car Accidents In Erie Lately
In a recent story, WICU mentions an increase of car accidents bringing extra business to local auto body shops. This brought up a very good point to a woman who was just in my office the other day asking if she was required to use the insurance company’s “Approved” auto body shop. The answer is NO, you can use any auto body shop you wish.
