Free Pennsylvania Motorcycle Training Courses
Motorcycle season is just around the corner, what better time for PennDOT to begin registration for their free motorcycle training classes? There is something for every rider in the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program (PAMSP). Offerings include beginner courses for those who need to become proficient before heading out on the road, as well as more advanced courses for seasoned riders to shake off the rust before a busy motorcycle season.
Basic Rider Courses
There are two basic rider courses, a 15-hour (5 hours in classroom, 10 hours of riding) called BRC, and a six-hour course called BRC2, for more experienced riders to fine tune their riding skills, brush up on the latest safety news, and review motorcycle laws before motorcycle season. BRC students are provided with a motorcycle and a helmet. All riders under 18 must complete the BRC before they can receive their motorcycle license. BRC2 students must provide their own motorcycle and helmet. They are also allowed to carry a passenger during practice on the training course.
Advanced Rider Course (ARC)
Molded from a military training course, the Advanced Rider Course is a one day session. Included in the course are 3.5 hours of classroom lectures and 4.5 hours of advanced riding exercises designed to enhance a rider’s confidence and awareness. They are also required to provide their own motorcycle and helmet. All course participants (BRC/BRC2/ARC) are required to provide their own protective gear (gloves, jacket, pants, boots).
Even A Course For The Trikes
Yes, there is a three-wheel course too. The 3WBRC, or 3-Wheeled Basic Rider Course, is a 12-hour class that includes 3.5 hours of classroom study and 6-8 hours of riding, usually completed in one or two days. Those who pass the 3WBRC are allowed to ride any three-wheeler, but their certification does not transfer to a 2-wheeled motorcycle, as there is a restriction code printed on the rider’s license.
