Are you ready for summer in Pennsylvania? Days on the lake, long motorcycle rides, picnics, and trips to amusement parks are just a few of the activities that Erie County families enjoy during the summer. However, summer also means sunburns, insect stings, falls, bumps, scrapes, and other accidental injuries. Below are seven summertime health and safety tips that can help you survive the summer with as few interruptions to the fun as possible.

1.  Protect your skin from sun exposure.

Always wear sunscreen and protecting clothing when you will be outside during the summer. According to the CDC, 70 percent of children and one-third of adults sustain a sunburn in the last year. If you or your child is sunburned, make sure that you treat the sunburn immediately and seek medical attention for severe burns.

2.  Avoid heat-related illnesses.

Dehydration and exposure to sun and high temperatures can cause heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, and heat rash. The CDC has a list of symptoms of heat-related illnesses and how to treat those conditions.

3.  Water safety.

If you are spending the day at the pool or the lake, make sure that you have everything you need for a safe day, including life jackets and life preservers. Never leave children unattended near water. Consider taking swimming lessons as a family.  Also, parents may want to consider taking a CPR or life-saving class.

4.  Be prepared for insect stings and bites.

Insect stings and bites can cause redness, itching, pain, and swelling. However, insect bites can also cause severe allergic reactions. In addition, some insects carry diseases that can cause life-threatening conditions. Before summer arrives, review how to prevent insect bites and first aid tips for insect stings so that you are prepared to handle any situation.

5.  Remember to wear helmets and other protective gear.

Whether your children are bicycling, rollerblading, horseback riding, or skateboarding, make sure that they wear a helmet, knee pads, and elbow pads. Falls are going to happen, but you can reduce the risk of injury by ensuring that your children wear protective gear designed for the specific summer sport or activity they are enjoying.

6.  Fireworks safety.

Fireworks are common during the summer months. However, the improper use of fireworks can cause serious injuries. Never allow children to use fireworks without adult supervision. Before using fireworks, review the fireworks safety tips from the National Safety Council.

7.  Food safety measures during the summer.

You should increase your food safety measures during the summer because bacteria grow faster in warmer temperatures. Make sure that your children wash their hands thoroughly before eating. When preparing food outdoors, use hand sanitizer and make sure that all meat is cooked to the property temperature before serving. Always make sure that cold foods are kept at the correct temperature until it is time to eat.
