It is cold and flu season! No one wants to be sick much less spend time at home and in bed when they need to be at work. With the holidays approaching, it is important to search for ways that we can reduce the risk of getting sick this winter. One way to avoid colds and the flu is to balance your work and home life. A good balance between work and home and promote healthy habits and overall well-being. Below are several tips that can help you find the right balance between work and home for you and your family.

Balancing Work and Home

Things you can do to help balance your home and work life to reduce the risk of winter colds and illnesses:

  • Exercise — It can be difficult to find time to exercise when you are working; however, it can be even more difficult during the winter months. Being busy with the holidays combined with the colder temperatures results in less time outside doing physical activities. You need to make time to exercise because it can help reduce stress in addition to providing health benefits.
  • Healthy Eating — Just like with exercise, the winter months make it more difficult to eat a healthy diet for some of us, especially if we are busy at work. Try to keep your diet as full of vegetables and healthy grains as possible. It is okay to enjoy holiday treats and meals, just make sure that you keep everything in balance.
  • Relax — Make sure you take time to relax and unplug from work. Working overtime can leave you run down and more susceptible to colds and other illnesses.
  • Avoid Perfectionism — It is good to do your best, however, don’t beat yourself up if things are not perfect. Make sure that the important items receive your full attention, but do not overwork yourself trying to make everything perfect.
  • Delegate — Learn how to delegate at work and You do not need to do everything yourself.

Avoiding Colds and the Flu

In addition to balancing your work and home life, you can take general precautions to avoid getting ill this winter.

  • Wash your hands with warm water and soap as often as possible, but especially after being in public.
  • Use hand sanitizer throughout the day, especially after touching public surfaces. Carry a small bottle of hand sanitizer in your purse, car, or pocket.
  • Avoid touching your face. Germs from your hands can easily transfer to your face, making it much easier to catch something.
  • Take your vitamins. Check with your physician to determine the best vitamins to take and the dosage that is right for you.
  • Keep warm. Bundle up each time you go out with coats, gloves, and scarves.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink at least eight glasses of water each day to stay healthy and hydrated.
